SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
By Dr. Carl 1. Nelson
To
the Citizens of Bartlett:
As the school districts of SAU #9 start
the 2007-08 school year, we will do so in a new Kennett High School and
the Mount Washington Valley Career and Technical Center
The completion of the new facilities will
not only provide us with a long-term solution to our high school
facilities needs, but will also assist in our continuous pursuit of
excellence in education. The Continuous Improvement Process, which has
guided us for the last nine years, allows us to make data-driven
decisions, which enables staff, administrators, and school board members
to focus energies and resources in the areas that have been identified
for improvement. The data obtained from our testing program,
postgraduate surveys, and other local sources provides us guidance to
continue staff development and curriculum development with regard to
budgeting and resource allocations targeted at compliance with No Child
Left Behind.
Once again, the New Year brought with it
the publication of our eighth Report Card for each of the individual
schools in SAU #9. Each building administrator will, in turn, have
meetings with parents and community members to review specific School
Report Cards for their school. This district-wide Report Card contains
such data as testing results, post graduation surveys, demographic
information, as well as socioeconomic information. The Report Card is
available at individual schools, the SAU #9 office, and on our web site
(www.kennett.kl 2.nh.us).
The dedication and quality of the people
who serve the communities of SAU #9 and the Bartlett School District
continues to remain our most valuable asset. The Valley’s desire to
improve and support education remains the driving force behind our fine
educational system. Your school board members and this administration
have made every effort to maintain and improve the high quality of
education and the delivery of services to our students and community and
at the same time control costs in a very difficult economy. We ask you
to remember that an investment in education is an investment in the
future of the Mount Washington Valley.
JOSIAH
BARTLETT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL REPORT
When we talk about our school we say,
“Josiah Bartlett Elementary School (JBES) is a community school”. We say
that because our community is so involved in making this a successful
school. At this time, we would like to take the opportunity to thank you
for making our school the great place it is for all of Bartlett’s
children. As we look back on these past months of the 2006-07 school
year, we have been able to accomplish many things that we couldn’t have
done without your continued support:
Facilities: This has been an incredible
year for renovations to make our school an even safer, warmer place. The
outside of the building was repainted white; the emergency driveway was
resurfaced, top-coated and installed with new drainage; a new stockade
fence was put around the dumpster to keep the bears out; a new sports
fence was installed by Route 302 for the safety of students and
motorists; a new tile floor was put in the office and bathrooms; new
exit signs were placed in 50% of the school; and completions to the fire
horn and strobe light to meet code were finished.
Also, the Kindergarten classes got a ‘new
face’. The classrooms were renovated this past summer and they look
wonderful! The teachers picked out a nice bright color for the walls and
trim, the carpet was taken out and tile was put down. We were able to
purchase two decorative area rugs for each classroom. New cabinets and
countertops were installed along with a new sink and bubbler. The
heating system in one room was updated and we have bulletin boards
everywhere! We appreciate the work that went into making the space a
better learning environment.
The Art Room had a very complete
renovation to make it a state-of-the-art facility. In fact, many people
have commented that it looks and feels like a high school art room. The
students can barely contain their excitement about the new area where
they can let their creativity flow. A new cinderblock space was built to
contain the kiln, and storage was organized for maximum efficiency. The
arrangement of the room works well for both the students and the art
teacher.
Staff: Along with the trust the community
puts in our school each and every day to help our Bartlett children
progress in their educational journey, you have also provided the staff
with opportunities to
challenge their minds and continue to be
lifelong learners. We have been afforded opportunities to learn from
experts working in our school with our children and the staff have
attended meetings and conferences outside the building to further
enhance their teaching skills. The staff is passionate in their quest
for knowledge and the chance to share that knowledge with colleagues and
students.
Parents: A big thank you to parents for
supporting our out-of-school education opportunities, such as the Boston
trip, Chewonki, the 7th grade Lewis and Clark river expedition, and the
8th grade White Mountains hike. We appreciate the financial support that
makes these overnight trips possible. The learning that comes out of
those adventures is unique and extremely important for our students.
Thanks to the parents for their support
of our extracurricular offerings. For example, early drop-offs for
sports, play practices, and homework help sessions. We see you in the
classrooms helping out; at Attitash and Bear Notch during the ski
season; in our school for Read-Aloud-Lunch ... and the list goes on and
on.
Another gift you have given us is your
time. We thank you for attending the school assemblies the students
present. We were very happy when we had so many parents and community
members come to this year’s Veterans Day ceremony. The gym was
absolutely packed! It is a wonderful feeling for our students when they
look out from the stage or the floor and see all those warm and
welcoming faces.
A few months later, we were pleased to
see so many of you come back again in support of our winter holiday
concerts which featured our bands and chorus. Again the gym was packed,
but we were prepared as we had a lot of additional seating.
Equipment: Through the strong foundation
we have been building over the years, we have become a leader in
technology in our Valley. When our children leave JBES, they are
prepared to meet the challenges of a fast-paced technological world.
Without the base the community built for us, we couldn’t have applied
for the many grants we have received during the past few years. Just
recently, our latest grant proposal was accepted and we received
$10,000.00 for technology equipment and professional development.
Thank you!
